Kindergarten: Who We Are Portrait Unit

In this unit, kindergarten students learned about portrait art. We practiced drawing and painting characters from books, like David. We also practiced drawing facial features like eyes, noses, mouths, and ears. We put it all together by doing water color and crayon self-portraits.

Grade 1: PYP - Travel Unit

In this transdisciplinary unit, students examined how location impacts how people live and travel. Our focus in art was developing landscape backgrounds using watercolor paints, markers, crayons, and oil pastels. We also practiced following step by step drawing instructions. We "traveled" to Antarctica, Peru, New York city, and Cuba.

Grade 2: PYP Unit: Who We Are

In this transdisciplinary unit, G2 students developed short statements about themselves that would tell there classmates a little bit about themselves. In art, students learned about abstact backgrounds and full body self-portraits.

Grade 3: Symbols Unit

In this transdisciplinary unit, G3 students explored the use of symbols in the world and how they can be used to convey meaning in the arts. They examined how symbols have been used historically and how they are used in modern times. Students learned the skill of styrofoam printing and practiced using oil pastels and watercolor paints.

Grade 4: Cultural Masks Unit

In this transdisciplinary PYP unit for "Who We Are," Mr. Mike worked with homeroom teachers and PYP coordinator to develop a fun and interesting unit related to culture and identity. In art, students learned about cultural masks from around the world. They inquired into the characteristics, materials, and meanings. They then designed and created their own masks using cardboard, glue, tape, and or paint. At the end of the unit, we did an exhibition for "International Day." It was a wonderful unit! 

Grade 5: Stand Alone Art Unit: Oil Pastels

In this stand alone art unit, Grade 5 art students explored the use of oil pastels. They looked at how this medium has been use by famous artists, how they can be used effectively, and what techniques can be used to create interesting art pieces.
