Inside Mr. Mike's Art Class

Teaching Art Concepts & Skills

K-5 Art Students are taught age-appropriate art concepts and skills through units and lessons based around the elements of art and the principles of design. Within the units, students learn to both create and respond to a variety of different styles and mediums. Students are exposed to a wide range of art to improve their observation skills and to draw inspiration.

Inquiry & Creativity

In Mr. Mike's PYP art classes, students are encouraged and given time to be curious and creative. Why? Because he knows that students need to explore, have fun, make mistakes, reflect, and apply what they've learned.

Specific art skills and concepts are important, but so is inquiry and art exploration.

Transdisciplinary Curriculum

Having taught with the PYP curriculum for the past 7 years, Mr. Mike has embraced the notion of teaching in a cross-curricular/transdisciplinary curriculum. The collaboration between teachers leads to great ideas, deeper understandings for students, and more meaningful lessons.

Mike has worked in collaboration with grade level teams, other specialists, and administration.

Mr. Mike has long been a proponent of using technology in the classroom. He is adept using a host of educational art programs - including Procreate, Sketchbook, Photoshop,  iMovie, and Scratch

Since kids are so naturally attracted to technology, Mr. Mike tries to incorporate it into activities and projects.
